Controlled Burn Update

Post Date:11/16/2023
As part of best management practices, a number of prescribed fires, commonly referred to as controlled burns, are occurring throughout the area by various governmental agencies. Prescribed fires are conducted by specialists when appropriate weather conditions and fuel moisture levels are optimal.

These specialists use these controlled burns to improve forage for wildlife, increase plant diversity and effectively reduce hazardous fuels while enhancing open space health. The reduction of these hazardous fuels help lessen the brushfire threat to public, firefighters and property.

Although smoke may be visible during these prescribed fires, fire management officials monitor environmental conditions to reduce its impact on air quality. No closure orders are issued for the prescribed fire areas, but to ensure public safety, temporary avoidance of these lands when fire is active, or smoke is visible, is recommended.

In addition to the prescribed fire at the Village of Orland Park Municipal Basin located between Ravinia Ave. and West Avenue in Orland Park, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County is conducting a prescribed fire at the Tinley Creek / Catalina Grove Family Picnic Area (143rd, Harlem, 151st, 80th) that may contribute to the smoke presence in the area.

With regard to the prescribed fire at the Orland Park Municipal Basin, the Village is removing invasive phragmites from the area.

• Removing phragmites help mitigate the threat of brushfires posed by large stands of this invasive species.
• Phragmites reduces storm water capacity and may contribute to localized flooding.
• Phragmites contribute to allergies.
• Phragmites are an invasive species that crowds out native vegetation and wildlife.

The bulk of the prescribed burn work has been completed at the Municipal Basin; however, some remaining field burning is still required. This remaining work is anticipated to occur either on Friday or early next week.

While the smoke generated during these burns can be visible and may cause temporary inconvenience, it is important to note that the process is carried out under strict guidelines and regulations to ensure safety and minimize any adverse effects. The vendor that is conducting the Municipal Basin prescribed burn, Davey Resource Group, is employing techniques such as wind direction analysis, weather monitoring, and adjusting burn intensity to ensure that the smoke disperses as quickly as possible.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your patience and cooperation during this project. Should you have any concerns or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Village of Orland Park Public Works Department at 708-403-6350.
